What has money ever done for you?
“It buys me things I need and want.”
It has never bought you anything. Money does nothing. We do things with it.
“Oh, you know what I mean.”
I do.
However, we treat temporary and material things as if they have the capability to do things for us, but they don’t.
Wealth, power, fame, and pleasure are abstract, fleeting pursuits. They are thoughtless, emotionless, and helpless. They only have what we give to them. Nonetheless, billions set these as their life’s focus.
Even among people who claim to believe in God, a majority invest their time, energy, care, and means into things that will never invest in them. While we may like to think we are more civilized than the Athenians who had an idol to worship on every corner, our gods are timeclocks, clicks, food, games, and feelings.
Don’t give in to the enticement of immediate gratification from things that can’t do anything for you.
Psalm 115:1-8
Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.
Why should the Gentiles say,
“So where is their God?”
But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them."
