Absolute Power

While many hold the same sentiment, John Dalberg-Action is credited with saying, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

With human beings, we can easily imagine the accuracy of this statement. If someone could make all the laws and judgments and uphold all punishments for law-breaking, either a harsh, oppressive dictatorship would develop, or the government would devolve into anarchy. The former would be from the growing improper use of total authority, or the latter from the lack of consistent execution of such authority.

With God, however, there is no such issue. He is the unchanging standard of what is right. Since His holiness is unwavering (an inherent trait in true holiness), it is not possible that He can be tempted by evil (Jas 1:13).

The objectivity afforded to us by a just, unchanging God (Jas 1:17) gives us security. It gives an immovable standard that enables us to make impartial judgements regarding how we ought to live.

Without such a standard, we will always battle over who is right, with no true assurance of the outcome. We can see examples of this everywhere we look today. Any philosophy that rejects God as the source of how to measure what is right is reliant upon consensus or control to rule.

Look to God,

Van
