“Disciple” means “a learner,” but that definition leaves us with a weak picture compared to the reality of what it means to be a disciple. We see the root of this in our word “discipline.”
Disciples were devoted pupils of a certain teacher. They followed him, practiced what he practiced, and identified themselves by his name. As long as they were his students, he was their master (Matt 9:15; 10:24).
Naturally, a student could only learn and grow to the level relative to his teacher’s ability. So, it was imperative that a good teacher would be chosen.
Before Jesus left this earth, He charged His disciples with a task: make more disciples.
Disciples of whom?
Him.
The best teacher and master.
“’Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matt 28:19-20, Unless otherwise stated: Scripture is taken from the New King James Version®. Who do you follow as your master teacher?
Let’s be disciples of Christ and make disciples,
