They Didn’t Check With God

Because of God’s support and instruction, Israel’s military might and strategy drew the attention and fear of the nations that heard the news of their conquests.

Some prepared to fight them…

“But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they worked craftily, and went and pretended to be ambassadors. And they took old sacks on their donkeys, old wineskins torn and mended, old and patched sandals on their feet, and old garments on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and moldy” (Josh 9:3-5, Unless otherwise stated: Scripture is taken from the New King James Version®. The Gibeonites prepared a deception. They went to Joshua seeking to make a deal for their safety. They lied, saying that they were from a “very far country” (Josh 9:9). For evidence of a long journey, they presented their traveling gear and food.

“Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the LORD. So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them” (Josh 9:14-15).

It seemed like an airtight case, but it was a fabrication. No one consulted God in the matter. As a result of their alliance with Gibeon, Israel was going to have to endure more conflicts.

Is there anything too small for us to pray to God about?

No.

If we don’t want to ask God about something, should we have anything to do with it?

No.

How do we know what God’s will is about anything He has taught?

His Word.

How can we avoid being deceived when there are people who would exert great effort to get us to believe their lies?

Consult God through His Word, live it, and pray.
